Horizon of Catastrophe
Ongoing painting project about catastrophic imagery in the news. Displayed under a light that slowly changes from red to white, these paintings resist settling into a commanded reading. Working against the immediacy of meaning and amid the struggles of ethical mediation, these works bear the subtitle “Wrong Ways to Look at the World”.
This project started with the finding of a strong black horizontal line on a misprinted postcard of Monet's Peace Monument of the Water-Lilies, a series of paintings that famously don’t have horizons.
